PURPOSE: To miniaturize a transmission type fingerprint input device. CONSTITUTION: The transmission type fingerprint input device includes a fiber optic plate 3 having a finger contacting surface with which a finger 1 is contacted to sample an image of the fingerprint on the finger 1, and a light source 2 producing light. The light from the light source 2 is caused to enter the finger 1 and scattered within the finger 1; the light exiting the surface of the finger 1 is used to form an image of the fingerprint. The light source 2 is positioned so that the light from the light source 2 enters substantially the center of a portion of the finger 1 containing the first joint on the palm side, and so that the light source 2 contacts the finger 1.
