The invention relates to a novel soluble compound,i.e.,a distyrylarylene derivative which has a soluble substituent and a specific central group and exhibits a solubility in organic solvent of 0.5 wt% or above at 20°C;and an organic electroluminescent device constituted of a cathode,an anode,and a single−or multi−ply organic membrane held between them wherein at least one of the plies contains the above novel compound.According to the invention,an organic membrane can be formed by a wet process,which makes it possible to produce an organic electroluminescent device having high luminous efficiency easily and simply.
