PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an excellent surface mount optical module which has a plurality of surface light emitting elements and a plurality of optical fibers, has a simple constitution, and can be made small in size and in which the surface light emitting elements and the optical fibers can be optically coupled properly. SOLUTION: In the optical module, a fiber holding substrate 2 provided with a plurality of the optical fibers 5 and four feet 7 on a lower surface is disposed on a substrate 1, a reflection mirror opposite to light entering ends 5a of the optical fibers 5 installed on the fiber holding substrate 2 is disposed over an array of the surface light emitting elements 4 having a plurality of light emitting points, a monitoring light receiving element 6 is disposed on the substrate, and with an optical branch device installed in a groove for mounting an optical element formed on the fiber holding substrate 2, the surface light emitting element 4 and the optical fiber 5 are optically coupled to each other.
