An electrochemical cell with a separator (20) having a reinforced edge (42) that provides structural rigidity to the separator after it has been contacted by the cell's electrolyte. The reinforced edge (42) extends beyond the interface between the cell's electrodes and serves to contain fragmented pieces (64) from one of the cell's electrodes that may become dislodged when the cell is dropped.
