PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal medium based on a mixture of polar compounds having a positive dielectric anisotropy. SOLUTION: This medium contains one or more kinds of compounds of formula I [wherein, (r) is 0 or 1; Q<1> is CH2 CH2 or single bond; ring A is 1,4- phenylene or trans-1,4-cyclohexylene; L is H or F; R is a 1-7C alkyl, alkoxy, oxaalkyl, fluoroalkyl or alkenyl; X is F, CF3 , OCF3 or OCF2 H] and one or more kinds of compounds selected from the group consisting of those of formulae II4-II7 [wherein, R<1> and R<2> are each on n-alkyl, n-alkoxy, n-fluoroalkyl or n-alkenyl having 1-9 carbon atoms].
