A set of adjustable-jaw hand-held pliers has two handles (1, 2) whose jaws (11, 21) move about a pivot (25). The distance between the jaws is adjustable by means of an elongated aperture (15) and ratchet (152). The two handles have shanks which are linked by a spring (218, 228) loaded hinged (2170, 177, 2270) dog-leg lever mechanism.
