<p>The snorkel (100) includes an elongate breathing tube (102) having an upper portion (104) and a lower portion (106). A lower opening is formed in the lower portion (106) and an upper opening (105) is formed in the upper portion (104). A mouthpiece (114) is located at the lower opening of the snorkel. A one-way valve (118) is disposed in the lower portion (106) and is oriented to prevent the flow of fluids into the lower portion (106), but to permit the flow of gases and fluids out of the lower portion (106). A check valve (140) is disposed in the upper portion (104). The check valve (14) includes a plate (142) pivotable from an open position permitting airflow through the upper opening (105), to a closed position preventing airflow through the upper opening (105).
