In the production of alcohols by gas phase hydrogenation of carboxylic acids or esters at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of catalysts containing or consisting of group IV oxide(s) as hydrogenation-active constituent, hydrogenation is carried out (a) at 250-400 degrees C and 5-100 bar in the presence of (b) primary or secondary alcohols, using a hydrogen to alcohol molecular ratio≤800.
