According to the invention, the sensors of a banknote processing device are function tested, adjusted and/or calibrated using testing media that have specific characteristics for testing, adjusting and/or calibrating individual or several sensors. Said specific characteristics can only be recognized and differentiated by the banknote processing device by means of a machine readable identification. For each identification, information regarding which characteristic of which sensor is to be checked, adjusted and/or calibrated on the basis of the testing medium is stored in the valuable document processing device. Furthermore, the sensor measured values concretely determined during test runs are compared with sensor measured values that were determined in prior test runs and/or during initial operation of the banknote processing device in order to determine a trend in the properties of the sensor and to timely exchange said sensor.
