PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high output signal from a magneto-resistive element even in a narrow track. SOLUTION: A magnetic head having a base body and a laminated part laminated on the base body and including a magneto-resistive element is manufactured. A face of a structure on the side of a magnetic recording medium, where an end face of the laminated part including an end face of the magneto- resistive element and a face of the base body appear and which includes the base body and the laminated part, is mechanically polished (step S2). Next, a first area which includes the face of the base body and does not include the end face of the magneto-resistive element is selectively etched in the area of the face of the structure on the side of the magnetic recording medium (step S4 to S6). Afterwards, the face of the structure on the side of the magnetic recording medium is entirely etched (step S7). Thus, the difference in height between the face of the base body on the side of the magnetic recording medium and the face of the magneto-resistive element on the side of the magnetic recording medium can be made small.
