PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a picture recording/reproducing method and device capable of achieving device simplification and power saving by sharing a picture data generating part for electronic finder display with a compression processing part. SOLUTION: Picture data are recorded by a progressive compression system using wavelet conversion. At the time of recording picture data, reduced pictures (pictures whose resolution is low) to be reproduced by a compression process are used as the data for display of a crystal finder 50. At the time of reproducing picture data, even picture data whose resolution is suitable for finder display can be reproduced by a progressive reproducing function, and outputted to the liquid crystal finder. When an external output device such as a large picture monitor is connected, even picture data whose resolution is suitable for the external output device can be reproduced and outputted.
