PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a belt type continuously variable transmission comprising a block belt 5 comprising a plurality of blocks 7, 7,... locked and fixed to tension belts 6 and 6 between a drive pulley 3 and a driven pulley 4 with pulley grooves 3c and 4c of a V-shaped cross section having a prescribed wedge angleα, and with pulley diameters changeable, in which transmission ability is not deteriorated even when oil mist is attached to surfaces of the pulley grooves 3c and 4c and a contact surface 7a of each block 7. SOLUTION: The wedge angleαis set at less than 20 deg., so that an apparent friction coefficientμ' between the pulleys 3 and 4 and the belt 5 is set high for holding high transmission ability. A friction coefficientμbetween the pulleys 3 and 4 and the block 7 is reduced to such a level that the friction coefficientμis lowered by adherence of oil mist.
