PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a working method for controlling a web thickness by which a web can be conveyed without the stretching of its knurled part or the reduction of the thickness of and further, the infliction of damage to the knurled part. SOLUTION: The knurling gear tooth 20 has many pieces of double-helical teeth 23, which are arranged in an orderly manner at a microscopic interval and set so that their number is limited within the range of 10 to 300 pieces/cm<2> . The double-helical teeth 23 are set so that the sum of their crest 24 areas falls within the range of 1 to 20 mm<2> /cm<2> .
