PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for controlling battery charging current are provided to control charging current in accordance with the state of the battery coupled to the portable device. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus comprises a terminal for controlling output current of a charging device; and the charging device for outputting current to be supplied to a battery and portable device in accordance with the control of the terminal. A method comprises a first step(S101) of judging whether a battery is coupled to a portable device; a second step(S105) of setting a first current supply mode for allowing for supply of the maximum current, if it is judged in the first step that the battery is not coupled to the portable device; and a third step(S102,S103,S104) of supplying charging current or current required for the operation of the device in accordance with the battery charged state, if it is judged in the first step that the battery is coupled to the portable device.
