PURPOSE: An idle stop control method for a motor vehicle is provided to reduce air contamination caused due to the exhaust gas by suppressing emission of exhaust gas during restarting of engine. CONSTITUTION: An idle stop control method comprises a first step(L1) of judging whether the idle stop condition for stopping starting of engine is satisfied; a second step(L2) of judging whether the coolant temperature is higher than 60 Deg.C and the catalyst temperature is higher than 250 Deg.C, or judging whether the coolant temperature is higher than 90 Deg.C and the catalyst temperature is higher than 150 Deg.C, if it is judged in the first step that the idle stop condition is satisfied; a third step(L3) of stopping operation of engine if the conditions are satisfied in the second step, and maintaining engine-on state if the conditions are not satisfied in the second step; and a fourth step(L4) of re-starting engine by the change of contact of the transmission, if the engine is stopped in the third step.
