<p>In an internal combustion engine, the fuel arrives directly in at least one combustion chamber of said internal combustion engine via at least one fuel injection device. A valve element of the fuel injection device is moved by a piezoactuator. The function of the piezoactuator is monitored and a malfunction is recognized (50). According to the invention, the mass flow of the fuel to the fuel injection device is reduced (52,56) when a malfunction (50) of the piezoactuator occurs in order to minimize the risk of damage to the internal combustion engine caused by a malfunction of said piezoactuator.</p> |
