The surface of a glass article 21 is immersed in a liquid bath 19 of a mixture of a (molten) ion-exchange medium for the glass and a silicone, silane or fluorocarbon, and heated so as to exchange ions from the ion exchange material with ions from the glass, while at least part of the silicone, silane or fluorocarbon is carried over to the glass surface. The silicone, silane or fluorocarbon may comprise from 0À1 to 0.5 weight per cent of the mixture and may be e.g. methylphenylpolysiloxane or methyl (1% beta-naphthol) polysiloxane. The glass may be a soda-lime glass and the ion exchange medium KNO 3 . The ion exchange may be carried out at about 900‹ F.</p> |
