PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the cost of a recorder having a plurality of sheet feed passages by decreasing the number of components of the recorder using a sheet feed passage judging means where the sheet feed passage being fed with a recording material can be judged using one recording material detecting means. SOLUTION: A decision is made whether a sheet detector is detecting a material to be recorded or not (step S1). If the sheet detector is detecting the material to be recorded (Yes at step S1), a decision is made that a roll sheet is fed from a first sheet feed passage (step S2). If a first release means becomes release state (Yes at step S3) under a state where the sheet detector is not detecting the material to be recorded (No at step S1), and the sheet detector is detecting the material to be recorded (Yes at step S5) under a state where the first release means has returned back to nonrelease state (No at step S4), a decision is made that a thick material to be recorded e.g. a tray for CDR, is fed from a second sheet feed passage (step S6).
