PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide video recording apparatuses other of which can simply display an index screen without the need for composite processing of background image data and reduced image data during production of the index screen even when one apparatus used for recording is in use. SOLUTION: The video recording apparatus is characterized in comprising an index image means 8 that composites background image data with a plurality of reduced image data with decreased resolution resulting from selecting a prescribed frame from a moving picture and encodes the composite image data by one frame according to a prescribed encoding system to generate index image data used for indices of the moving picture, a management data generating means 15 for generating management data to manage the index image data, and an index image data recording means 11 that records the index image data and the management data to a recording medium, and the video recording apparatus is characterized in to record the index image data and the management data to the recording medium together with the moving picture.
