The airbag is fastened with its base to a housing (11), and fitted into it when folded (19). The opposite side sections of the flat airbag with opposite under and upper layers, are folded several times about folding edges, which are offset from the outer edge towards the housing, until the last edge is located so far inside the housing, that its distance to the housing wall is the same as the thickness of the folded airbag parcel. The two opposite parcels are fixed in position at right angles to the folding plane and parallel to the housing walls. The projecting vertical ends (16) of the parcels in folded into the housing. After activation, the airbag unfolds initially in direction of lap and torso of the passenger.
