Water hardness is measured indirectly, by an optical signal transmitter (61) and receiver (62) comprised in a sensor unit (6). The beam (7) passes through a transparent surface (5), on which limescale deposits can form. In accordance with results of measurement, the time at which regeneration will take place, is set. An Independent claim is included for corresponding equipment. Preferred features: The measured value is compared with a given desired value at which regeneration takes place. Following regeneration, during flushing, an inspection determines whether the deposits have been reduced. If not, the unit indicates inadequate brine concentration, or further flushing is blocked. To check for brine addition, regeneration is carried out regularly. |
