The internal combustion engine has at least one charger (16) driven by the exhaust gas flow (28) from the engine and a camshaft that is adjusted in accordance with the Miller method. An additional compressor stage (32) in series or parallel with the charger is not driven by the exhaust gas flow from the engine but contains a mechanically or electrically driven charger, especially an electric booster. AN Independent claim is also included for a method of operating an internal combustion engine.
