Optically-active compounds containing hydroxy groups are advantageously produced from a carbonyl compound with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst and a base, whereby a catalyst is used which contains a support-bonded Ru (II) complex, produced from a racemic or pro-atropisomeric biphosphine and an enantiomeric diamine.
