The operating method has a required value, used for control of the automobile drive unit, provided independently of the position of a driver control, e.g. the gas pedal and the velocity of the vehicle. The engine revs is used for calculation of the required value instead of the vehicle velocity during starting off. An Independent claim for a device for operation of an automobile drive unit is also included.
