PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that a surface defect of a cylindrical body can be inspected accurately only when a reflected wave from the defect is discriminated from noise, and to provide an apparatus for inspecting the surface of a cylindrical body and a method for processing data in which the effect of noise is eliminated by setting a decision criterion of significant data depending on the scanning direction of the cylindrical body. SOLUTION: The apparatus for inspecting the surface of a cylindrical body comprises a plurality of probes arranged on the surface of the cylindrical body while having circumferential and oblique scanning directions, a first grouping number of scanning data within the circumference of the cylindrical body predetermined in correspondence with individual probes and a second grouping number having a predetermined number of pitches appearing in the scanning pitch of continuous scanning data, and a processing unit for evaluating the scanning data from grouped scanning data satisfying the first and second grouping numbers.
