Cable shears or cable shears with ratchet grip have a contactless voltage tester for determination of whether a cable is liver or not. The voltage tester is integrated into the grip or handle of the shears and has a visual and or audible alarm. The invention also relates to a corresponding voltage tester that can attached to the handle of existing cable shears.
