Device for inductively heating metallic workpieces (2) comprises: a heating device (3, 4) which produces an electromagnetic field to heat the workpieces; and a conveying roller (9) to move the workpieces through the heating device. Sections of the roller lying in the active region of the electromagnetic field are made from a ceramic material. Preferred Features: The conveying roller is formed as a sleeve having a peripheral wall made from ceramic material. The workpieces are made from cast steel strips, steel thin slabs or steel slabs.
