A directional drilling pod (9) for association with a drill bit (1) where the pod (vein, finned or otherwise) includes surfaces (15) to interact with the hole surrounds such that the drill string (17) is capable of being manipulated as an input into the pod to rotate the pod to thus choose a different advancement direction for subsequent operation of the drill bit when the pod resists rotation in which time the pod and the bit will steer in a predetermined direction as a result of the pod orientation. In another mode of operation however the drill bit is capable of being drivingly rotated together with the pod so as to advance the pod assembly substantially rectilinearly.
