An adhesive-bonded lap-joint comprises on each side of the centre-line of the joint a layer of adhesive the thickness of which is equal or approximately equal to where S Loo is the minimum thickness of ad - hesive, S is the wall-thickness of the members being joined, Z the distance from the centre-line, G L the modulus of slip of the adhesive and A F is the elastic modulus if the joint is loaded in tension or compression, or the shear modulus if the joint is shear-loaded or an intermediate valve for combustion loading. The edges may be bent, Fig. 1, or chamfered, Fig. 2 (not shown), to produce the desired gap. Bevelled or stepped edges. Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), may approximate to the desired form. |
