842,692. Mixing, grinding, crushing &c. apparatus. FRENKEL, M.S. June 20, 1956 [June 22, 1955; Oct. 14, 1955; Dec. 6, 1955; Feb. 14, 1956; April 10, 1956], Nos. 18115/55, 29431/55, 35024/55, 4661/56 and 10955/56. Classes 59 and 86 [Also in Groups V, VI and XXX] Relates to apparatus for mixing solids, liquids and powders with, if desired, simultaneous grinding, crushing, extruding, &c. The mixer shown in Fig. 1 comprises an inner component 1 with a helical thread 12 and an outer component 2 with a helical thread 13 of opposite hand, the components being adapted for rotation in opposite directions. The screw groove 15 in the component 1 varies in cross-section with corresponding variation in an opposite sense of the groove 16 in the component 2. The mixer extruder, with extrusion head 32 of Fig. 4, has the outer component 2 in four sections 21...24 driven independently. There are two start threads of opposite hand on the inner and outer components which rotate in opposite directions. In the mixer shown in Fig. 5, material supplied through a funnel 6 is mixed in its passage between components 1, 2 and may be further mixed with material supplied through a funnel 37 and passed between the component 2 and an outer rotatable component 36, the component 2 stopping short to allow the materials to be mixed between components 1 and 36. Fig. 6 shows another extrusion mixer, suitable for injection of plastics, comprising screw components 1, 2 in sections, the outer component sections being separately driven. The inner screw component 1 is rotated and is also given a reciprocating movement through eccentrics 64, 63 and an eccentric driving shaft 66, the reciprocating stroke being adjustable. Fig. 7 shows a mixer in which there is no inner rotating component, the device having two sectors, sector 84 in which the cross-sectional area of the groove of thread 83 increases and sector 85 in which the cross-sectional area decreases, and in which is located a rigid internal component 93 consisting of a cylindrical or slightly tapered portion 94 and a screwthreaded portion 96; a passage 92 for a heating or cooling medium may be provided. In a modification the portion 96 is omitted. Another means for heating or cooling the materials being mixed, Fig. 9 (not shown), which may alternatively be used as a supplementary mixer, is described.
