PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader and an image input/output device for narrowing a region where the circumferential part of an original platen which is unreadable. SOLUTION: A recessed part 50 composed of a circular hole is formed in a guide member 16 that is connected to the circumferential part of the original platen 14, to abut on an original so that the original is positioned on the face 15 of a board of the original platen 14. A scanning part reads a shadow of the recessed part 50, recessed part image data representing the shadow of the recessed part 50 are produced, and a control part sets an origin of origin image data corresponding to a reading origin 47 on the face 15 of the board in the scanning part on the basis of the recessed part image data.
