PURPOSE: An air conditioner with controllable discharge area and operating method of the same are provided to control reaching distance and strength of cooled air. CONSTITUTION: An air conditioner comprises a cabinet having an outlet(46) to discharge air to the outside; a plurality of horizontal vanes(48a,48b) installed on the outlet of the cabinet; and driving devices connected to the horizontal vanes, respectively, so that the horizontal vanes are able to move in directions different to each other. Discharge area is controlled by operation of the horizontal vanes.
