PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an aromatic aldehyde at a low cost in high yield by selectively oxidizing an aromatic hydrocarbon having the aliphatic hydrocarbon substituent as a raw material. SOLUTION: This method for producing the aromatic aldehyde is as follows. The aromatic hydrocarbon having at least the one aliphatic hydrocarbon substituent is dissolved in a low-polar hydrocarbon solvent and exposed to light in the presence of a photocatalyst. Thereby, the substituent is converted into an aldehyde (CHO) group.
