PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correctly adjust the quantity of a liquid in a liquid storage chamber by changing the strength of braking in accordance with the weight of washing in a drum by detecting the moment of inertia of the drum. SOLUTION: In a washing machine having a drum rotating with the center of rotation kept horizontal or inclined, a driving motor rotating the drum, a liquid storage chamber storing a liquid in the interior by a centrifugal force, an eccentric load detection means detecting the eccentric load of washing in the drum, and a control means adjusting the quantity of a liquid in the liquid storage chamber in accordance with the eccentric load detected, and adjusting the quantity of a liquid in the storage chamber by braking the rotating drum, and a moment of inertia measuring means detecting the rotation of the drum. The control means computes the moment of inertia acting on the drum on the basis of the rotation of the drum detected by the moment of inertia measuring means, and adjusts the strength of braking applied to the drum in accordance with the moment of inertia computed to ensure that the deceleration of the drum will be constant, when adjusting the quantity of a liquid in the liquid storage chamber.
