The apparatus has a start and an end plate (3) for holding under tension a cable (6) parallel to the rail. The start and end plates each have a fixed angle stop (2) for locating on the rail head and against the edge of the rail. The tension cable is fixed to each plate at identical distances from the rail surface. The apparatus also has a middle plate (4) on which is arranged sliding measuring device which is continually adjustable in the vertical direction. The sliding device has a contact probe (5) for detecting the vertical position of the cable.
