PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a backlash from generating at a locked position of a piston rod. SOLUTION: A cylinder with a locking mechanism comprises a locking mechanism 28 retaining the piston rod 26 in a designated position by coming in contact with a ball 50 on a slanting plane 54 of a stopper member 56, and a backlash absorbing mechanism 30 arranging a plunger member 68 and spring member 72 giving retaining force so that the ball 50 always keeps in contact with the slanting plane 54 of the stopper member 56 when the piston rod 26 is locked in a designated position by means of the locking mechanism 28.
