PURPOSE: A heat pump type multi air conditioner is provided to allow a plurality of indoor units to heat and cool independently with each other. CONSTITUTION: An air conditioner includes a first heat exchanger(52) and a second heat exchanger(62) installed in a first indoor unit(51) and a second indoor unit(61), respectively; a third heat exchanger(71) and a fourth heat exchanger(72) acting as condensers when the first heat exchanger and the second heat exchanger are operated as coolers, and acting as evaporators when the first heat exchanger and the second heat exchanger are operated as heaters; a compressor(74) compressing refrigerant circulating the heat exchangers; a direction switching valve(80) switching circulating direction of refrigerant so that the first indoor unit and the second indoor unit are operated as the heaters or the coolers; and a refrigerant flow switching device changing flow of refrigerant circulating the heat exchangers so that all of the indoor units are operated for cooling or heating at the same time or some of the indoor units are operated for cooling while the other of the indoor units are operated for heating.
