Aqs. electrolyte activates Ni sheet and contains Ni salt, NH4OH and ammonium salt with same anion as the Ni salt; the ratio of molar concentrations of ammonium salt to nickel salt is >=0.1/1 but =3/1, pref. 1-1.5. Preferably ammonia/Ni is 0.1/3.
