PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording and reproducing device for rewriting and updating data or softwares stored inside the device by a simple and easy method. SOLUTION: A video cassette tape (cassette for rewriting) on which the new data or the softwares for rewriting and updating are recorded is prepared beforehand and reproduced by a VTR for rewriting. By a control circuit 7 of the VTR, the discrimination is made that this cassette is used for the rewriting use from a reproducing signal of a header part of the cassette for rewriting, and the rewriting and updating operation is carried out by writing the data to be reproduced thereafter or the softwares into a storage device 8 of the VTR.
