<p>The invention is directed to a composite graft for the treatment of conditions associated with photoreceptor loss. Such conditions include, for example, central vision loss as a result of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). In particular, the composite graft of the invention comprises a layer of connecting cells and a layer of photoreceptors. The connecting cell layer synapse locally with the adjacent photoreceptors of the graft and, after transplantation, with interneurons or retinal ganglion cells of the recipient retina, functionally linking the grafted photoreceptors with the host's visual system.</p> |
