PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the frictional resistance of contact surface with a cam by effectively lubricating an upper surface of a top wall of a tappet. SOLUTION: In a tappet for an internal combustion engine forming a cylinder with a top, in which an upper surface of a cylinder part 1a is blocked with a top wall 1b provided between an upper end of an engine valve 5 and a cam 4 equipped in a cylinder head, a recessed oil reservoir 3 smaller in width of the cam 4 is set at the center of the upper surface of the top wall 1b.
