Textile materials, e.g. filaments, fibres and fabrics of cotton, rayon, polyamides, polyacrylonitrile and polyesters, are softened by treatment with an ester of a fatty acid of 6-30 carbon atoms and a di- or tri-saccharide, e.g. sucrose, maltose, lactose or raffinose. The textile material is immersed in an aqueous liquid containing 0.2-1.5 g. of the ester per litre. The treatment is advantageously carried out in the presence also of an amidamine prepared from a high mol. wt. carboxylic acid, such as lauric, stearic or oleic acid, and a polyamine such as 3-dimethylamino- or 3-diethylamino-proplyamine. Examples describe the treatment of spun rayon, knitted fabric of polyacrylonitrile fibres and cotton fabric by immersion in aqueous solutions of saccharose monostearate, saccharose distearate, a saccharose-coconut oil reaction product and a cane sugar-tallow reaction product.
