PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for simultaneously fusing upper and lower plates of a discharge tube of a plane illuminating device are provided to pattern a discharge path of the discharge tube and, simultaneously, fuse the upper and lower plates using upper and lower flat glass plates. CONSTITUTION: A lower glass plate is fixed to a central groove of a lower mold. An intermediate support having the same shape as the shape of a discharge tube formed on the lower glass plate is arranged on the lower glass plate. An upper glass plate having the same size as the size of the lower glass plate is superposed on the intermediate support, having the intermediate support between the upper and lower glass plates. An upper mold is placed on the upper glass plate. Heat and pressured are applied to the mold assembly to fuse the upper glass plate to an exposed portion of the lower glass plate, to form the discharge tube. After cooling, the upper and lower molds are eliminated, and the intermediate support is removed from the discharge tube in the direction of the length of the tube.
