The invention comprises compounds of the formula:- <FORM:0879155/IV (b)/1> where M represents two hydrogen or alkali metal atoms or an alkaline earth metal atom, and a process for their preparation by reacting 2-mercapto-3-hydroxy-succinic acid as such or an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt thereof with a trivalent antimony derivative, e.g. a trihalide or antimonious oxide. The 2-mercapto-3-hydroxysuccinic acid used may be either the threo or erythro torm, giving corresponding stereoisomeric antimoniomercaptohydroxysuccinic derivatives designated as "form B" and "form A" respectively. Examples detail the preparation of antimoniomercaptohydroxysuccinic acid (form A), and of the lithium salts of both forms A and B. Threo and Erythro-2-mercapto-3-hydroxy-succinic acids are prepared by the action of potassium thiosulphate upon cis- and transepoxysuccinic acids respectively.ALSO:Therapeutic compositions, useful in the treatment of bilharziasis, comprise at least one antomony derivative of the formula <FORM:0879155/VI/1> (wherein M represents two hydrogen or alkali metal atoms or an atom of an alkaline earth metal) together with a pharmaceutical carrier and optionally with other therapeutically active compounds. The compositions may be formulated for oral use, e.g. in the form of tablets, pills, dispersable powders, granules, solutions, suspensions or syrups, but are preferably sterile injectable compositions for parenteral administration. |
