PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-quality color image reader, with which positions are not deviated between the read lines in respective colors by an expansion/ reduction rate or read resolution. SOLUTION: The color image reader is provided with a photoelectric transducer unit 1, in which a plurality of line photoelectric transducers 2R, 2G and 2B for reading images corresponding to a plurality of colors are parallel arrayed at prescribed line gaps in a subscan direction, and by changing the relative scanning speeds of an original S and the photoelectric transducer unit 1 in the subscanning direction, the expanded/reduced image is read. Corresponding to the expansion/reduction rate and a numerical value determined from the line gap value, the timing of output from the photoelectric transducers 2R, 2G and 2B corresponding to respective colors is controlled.
