The buffer comprises two cylindrical housing sections with one guide inside the other, and with a feather key fastened in one section and a corresponding guide slot in the other section. The guide slot (2) is widened at least at one end, the maximum widening (3) corresponding to 1.5 - 3 times the width of the guide slot. The guide slot is extended approximately by the length of the widening or the feather key seat is displaced so that with maximum spring deflection the feather key is guided through the whole length of the guide slot.
