PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plug opening device and a plug opening method in which a lid of a container such as a milk bottle or the like can be easily removed from the container. SOLUTION: A plug opening device 10 is comprised of a rod-like piercing member 16 having an acute extremity end 12 and having two shoulders 14 near the acute extremity end 12; a holding means 18 for holding the piercing member 16 in a substantially vertical direction with the acute extremity end 12 being faced down; a turning means 24 for rotating the piercing member 16 around a center axis 20; an upward or downward moving means for moving the holding means 18 in an upward or downward direction; and a needle-like member 30 pierced into a lid 28 of a container 26 to fix the lid 28.
