METHOD FOR PRODUCING SYNDIOTACTIC STYRENE COPOLYMER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copolymer which is obtained by introducing a styrene derivative having a methyl group at the meta position into a syndiotactic styrene copolymer, and also provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: The copolymer is a syndiotactic styrene copolymer containing a methyl styrene monomer and a styrene monomer, wherein the copolymer has the phenyl groups the C1 carbons of which have their respective tacticities of 30% or more as determined at the racemic pentad in<13> C-NMR. The method for producing the syndiotactic styrene copolymer comprises copolymerizing the methylstyrene monomer and the styrene monomer using a catalyst in the presence of a solvent, wherein the catalyst contains a reaction product between a transition metal compound and at least one promoter for the catalytic component; and the solvent is an aromatic hydrocarbon and/or a halogenated aromatic hydrocarbon having a dielectric constant of 2.0-10.0.
