PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer that can efficiently encode data and perform color printing, and to provide its resource utilizing method. SOLUTION: The resource utilizing method for the printer capable of color printing in the case of coding image data and storing the coded data includes a step S511 of discriminating the color element of the image data and a step S512 of encoding only the color element, corresponding to the discrimination result. The method prepares a plurality of encoding systems, selects one among a plurality of encoding systems corresponding to the discrimination result and encodes the image data.
