METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR MONITORING AND MAINTAINING THE TEMPERATURE OF AN ANALOG LASER MODULE

A method is provided for maintaining the temperature of a laser diode (101) located in a laser package (104). The method begins by monitoring a photocurrent generated by a photodiode that collects light from a back-facet of the laser diode (101) located in the laser package (104) while maintaining a constant bias level to the laser diode (101). Next, the laser diode (101) is heated or cooled to maintain a substantially constant photocurrent, thereby maintaining the temperature of the laser diode (101) at a substantially constant value. The laser package (104) may be an uncooled laser package (104) such as coaxial can laser package (104).
